Sonam Wangchuk was born on 1st September 1966, in Uleytokpo, a tiny village 70 km west of Leh on Leh-Srinagar highway.

He did not start to get formal education until the age of 9 because there were no schools in his tiny village.

He has faced much trouble to get admission in a school at the age of 9 in Srinagar. The language issue is also faced by him. 

He went alone to Delhi in 1977 and later self-finance his Mechanical Engineering from NIT, Srinagar. After that in 2011, he also went to France to study Earthen Architecture.

He is not just an engineer by profession but he also one of the best innovator and education reformist.

All his personal experience and hard work shaped his future and also his frustration against the education system motivate him to start the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL). 

He also working on reforming government school system, and also creating awareness in the youth for the insensitive education system. He also helping villagers for harnessing solar energy. 

Wangchuk has founded and worked as an editor of Ladags Melong (That is a Ladakh’s only print magazine) from 1993 to 2005.

All his experience and ideas have been used by many government agencies to build a best and valuable education system.

He also entrusted in a work for formulating the policy on Education and Tourism as a part of the Vision Document Ladakh 2025 and he has given his service to National Governing Council for Elementary Education in the HRD Ministry of India. Apart from this he also involved in many other agencies to remained integrated development.

A Bollywood movie 3 Idiots made by taking inspiration from Wangchuk. He made lots of contribution for people living in harsh conditions in the mountains.

He also designs and builds several solar mud buildings in Ladakh, Nepal and Sikkim to save energy.  

“Ice Stupa” one of his projects has brought fame for Wangchuk in India as well as outside the country. With the help of this “Ice Stupa” farmers Of Ladakh take a benefit in the month of April and May. 

Wangchuk has constructed a two-storey prototype of ice stupa with the help of his team in 2014 that can store around 15,00,00 litres of winter stream water to use it later.
